We are proud to announce that vts-browers-js now supports non-Latin glyphs. This is a major milestone in the development of the map browser which brings support for different writing systems like Arabic, Indic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and others.

Different writing systems

The new rendering system supports custom fonts and you can also combine different types of fonts in one map. For the fonts we are using our own file format which is designed to be compact and suitable for WebGL presentations. The layout engine also supports basic bidirectional rules and more complex features like glyph substitutions. The quality of the rendered text is now much better and the glyphs stay sharp even when scaled to a larger size. It is also possible to configure the appearance of the text outline. For example, you can easily add colored stroke or shadow.
